The images in this collection document the establishment of a new center for space and meteorological research and education. In 1964, the University of Wisconsin-Madison achieved an agreement with NASA, the National Science Foundation, and the State of Wisconsin to support construction of a high rise building to house the Department of Meteorology and the Space Science and Engineering Center, founded by Verner E. Suomi in 1965.
SSEC researchers and Department of Meteorology faculty moved into the new building at 1225 W. Dayton Street in October 1968. The formal dedication was held one year later.
